Chapter 12

The next morning Lily woke hearing voices coming from the kitchen. Too tired to put on her prosthesis, she used her crutch to make her way to see who was there. Annie and Shane had joined Matt and Charlotte. They all looked up as she hobbled into the room and Matt assisted her to her chair.

She assured everyone that she felt much better, but agreed that Charlotte would drive her to the lab later that morning for more bloodwork. The discussion stalled out and she looked around at the anxious faces.

“I feel as though I’ve brought your conversation to a halt. What were you all talking about?”

It did not escape her notice that everyone seemed to avoid her eyes. “Honey, what’s wrong? You all are scaring me.”

Matt walked over and wrapped his arms around her and tucked her into his embrace. “Baby, we’re just discussing how you got food poisoning and no one else from the restaurant did.”

“Maybe I just had something that no one else ordered. Or bad fish. I know it couldn’t have been intentional. I’ve thought about this non-stop. I couldn’t be more boring. I know Ellen was much more outgoing than I was and I honestly don’t know anything about her personal life, but there was nothing we were working on together that would have gotten her killed or have someone after me.”

Charlotte entered the conversation. “Do you think Ellen could have been involved in something outside of work that was suspicious?”

Shane spoke up, “It doesn’t appear that she was involved in anything. At least not that we have found. No boyfriend. No priors. No large debts. No major changes in her bank account. Had a group of friends, but no one suspicious.”

The group continued to talk for several minutes before Shane and Annie left. Lily took a phone call while Matt and Charlotte coordinated when they would be available for Lily.

As she got off the phone, she said that Suzanne was bringing by some food later so that Charlotte didn’t have to do all the cooking. Looking at Matt’s worried face, Lily reached up to cup his cheek with her small hand. “Honey, it’ll be all right. Suzanne won’t kill us with her cooking.”

Laughing, he kissed her before leaving for work, leaving Charlotte and Lily alone.

“Well, my dear. I think you should get back into bed and rest today. We will make a trip out for your labwork around noon.”

Lily agreed, noticing that she was exhausted just from having been up a little while. Before walking back into the bedroom, she grabbed her laptop and the two thumb drives with her info from Ellen. Might as well get a little work done.

It did not take long for the tedious work to put her to sleep. Charlotte found her later, asleep in bed, Pippi curled up next to her and her laptop still open on the covers next to her. Smiling as she looked down at the woman who had tempted her son into falling in love, she tucked the covers around Lily’s shoulders.
